Florianópolis is the capital of Santa Catarina state, in southern Brazil. Located in Santa Catarina island, it is one of the most important tourist destinations of the country.

The island is called "Island of Magic" for its geography similar to the figure of a Witch, and the superstitions of the Azorean settlers.

 

This coastal island has hundreds of all kind of beaches -from rough seas with large waves ideal for surfing, to sheltered coves. It also offers hills, Atlantic rainforest, islands, sandbanks, dunes, rivers, mangroves, rock inscriptions and two large lakes: do Peri and da Conceição.

 

Downtown Florianopolis - places to visit, activities and things to do

Floripa, as the locals call it, has many tourist attractions, excellent urban infrastructure and services -inns, hotels, restaurants, malls, convention centers, airport, nightlife, and avenues. However, the city still preserves its historic center in customs, traditions and architecture of the colonial era.


MAIN ATTRACTIONS
The beaches, Conceição Lagoon, Hercilio Luz bridge and the forts are a must! when visiting the island.


Beaches

The most famous beaches are -north of the island Jurerê, Canasvieiras, Ponta das Canas, Lagoinha; east Mozambique, Barra da Lagoa, Mole and Joaquina; south Campeche, Armação do Sul Pântano.

 

Northern Beaches
They are equipped with the best infrastructure -International Jurerê, Canasvieiras, English, Ponta das Canas, Lagoinha, Brava, Daniela and Santinho.

 

South Beaches
There are 11 beaches, some pristine and inaccessible, just by trails through the forest, including Naufragados, Solião and Lagoinha do Leste.

 

Eastern Beaches

The eastern beaches -Barra da Lagoa, Mole, Joaquina, Mozambique, Galheta, and Ponta do Retiro are ideal for surf, with rough sea and waves up to 3 meters, where international competitions take place.

 

South Bay Beaches
From Maria Rita beach to Praia do defunto with 31 beaches, being Ribeirão da Ilha, Tapera and Caieira da Barra do Sul the highlights. Not all are suitable for bathing.

 

North Bay Beach
There are 18 beaches in the typical Azorean settlements: Santo Antônio de Lisboa and Sambaqui.

The Lagoa da Conceição has 7 beaches with calm waters, green, transparent and shallow, ideal for kayaking, kite and windsurfing. Do Peri Lagoon has the largest freshwater reservoir on the island.

The sand is thicker than the island beaches, with calm waters ideal for kayaking. Itaguaçu stands out for its beauty and intriguing view of special stones that, according to local legend, would be witches transformed by the devil.


Lagoa da Conceição

The district of Lagoa da Conceição combines beaches, dunes, mountains and the largest lagoon of the island. The lagoon is divided into two parts by a bridge: the Lagoa de Dentro and the Lagoa de Fora. These two parts of the lagoon interior and exterior, are separated by a strait.

This beautiful saltwater lagoon, due to its connection with the sea, is ideal for water sports like kayaking, kite surfing, windsurfing, sailing and jetskiin.

 

Boat trips are made to the "Canto da Lagoa" which shows the very nature around the lake and there is a stop to visit a natural waterfall. There are walking trails through the Atlantic Rainforest around the lagoon, with toucans, parrots and monkeys.

Lagoa is located near downtown Florianopolis and the east beaches -Barra da Lagoa, Praia Mole surf beach and Praia da Joaquina with excellent dunes for sand-boarding.

 

The center, known as the "centrinho da Lagoa" offers traditional crafts of the island and plenty of nightlife on the coast of the lagoon, with cafes, restaurants, bars and live music.


Hercilio Luz Bridge
Symbol of the city, it is one of the world’s largest suspension bridges. 821 meters high, it connects the island of Santa Catarina to the mainland.

Beira-Mar Norte Avenue

This famous avenue along the coast of Baía Norte (North Bay) has a waterfront promenade with a bicycle path and jogging track, and ideal spot for runners, walkers, bikers and and rollerbladers.

Historical Center
Metropolitan Cathedral from 1753, located in front of November 15th Square, Church of Nossa Senhora de Rosário from 1787, São Francisco from 1819, São Sebastião from 1856.

Santo Antônio de Lisboa and Ribeirão da Ilha are the oldest and most picturesque spots settled by the Portuguese from the Azores. It features colonial architecture and traditions, canoes and liana baskets.

Ingenio Caminho dos Açores
Located in Santo Antônio de Lisboa, representing the hundreds of devices that existed on the island in the nineteenth century. They were used to produce cassava flour and other products such as handcrafted rum, made in stills, and brown sugar.

 

History and culture

The island has many stories of shipwrecks, pirates, explorers (Bandeirantes), foreign invasions and restored historic forts.
• Portuguese fortress of 1744, in North Bay.
• House of the painter Victor Meireles, one of the oldest in the city, now a museum dedicated to the artist, gallery of contemporary art and film club
• Integrated Center of Culture (CIC), where the Museo de Arte de Santa Catarina (Male), Teatro Ademir Rosa and Nossa Senhora de Desterro Cineclub are located.
• Cinemas, theaters, bookstores, art galleries, museums and symphony orchestra.

Archaeological Sites
Located in several beaches on the island, access to the site of the island of Campeche, with cave inscriptions from 5000 years, is only possible by boat. The cliff from the beach of Joaquina has another important archaeological site of 4000 years, where shells, charcoal, polished stone axes, beaters and human bones were found. In Praia Mole there are also cave inscriptions of geometric signs, grooves and grinders.

Trails: more than 30 trails with fine beaches as their final destination. The best known are: Naufragados, Lagoinha do Leste, Saquinho, Costa da Lagoa, Lagoa do Peri.


Surf: of the 100 beaches on the island, 12 are suitable for surfing with waves ranging from 1 to 1.5 m. The best ones are: Playa Brava and Santinho north, Joaquina (home to international championships), Galheta and Moçambique (with tube waves) to the east; Campeche, do Morro das Pedras do, do Matadeiro, da Lagoinha de Leste and  Naufragados to the south. For beginners the best are Barra da Lagoa (east) and Ingleses (north).

Avenida Beira-Mar Norte
This area of ​​mangrove borders the North Bay for 6km. Throughout Beira-Mar is a bicycle path and jogging track.


Historical Center
