Surf resort spot par excellence, Puerto Escondido’s main attraction are the wide and long beaches, warm and transparent waters and incredible waves. Every november the city hosts the World Surf Championships.
Puerto Escondido is located on the south pacific coast of Mexico, State of Oaxaca, 400 km south of Acapulco and 800 km from Mexico City.

The area offers beaches of natural beauty, being "Playa Zicatela" and "Playa Principal" the two most important ones. Playa Principal is separated from Zicatela beach by a cliff named "El Morro" (The Hill) with a viewpoint from where you can appreciate an excellent panoramic view of both beaches.

Zicatela Beach is the most beautiful beach and the one with the best waves. Daily, talented surfers venture into the intrepid and gigantic waves. The beach is around 40 to 50 meters wide, with a lenght of 2 miles and with waves that reach up to 6 meters high (20 feet).

It has many restaurants and bars on the beach to enjoy both during the day and night where an agitated nightlife goes on with a mix of different nationalities.

Zicatela’s picturesque main street offers a great variety of hotels, hostels, cabins, beach houses, guests houses shops, restaurants, bars, souvenir shops and everything needed for a perfect vacation.

"Playa Principal" is a fishing beach from where the boats leave for the aquatic activities, and it’s the most crowded one. This beach is located on the most antique part of the city and it’s the heart of Puerto Escondido.

Parallel to the beach it’s where the famous Perez Gasga street is called "El Adoquín" (paving stone) opened to traffic during the day and closed at night as a pedestrian that gets very crowded. It’s packed up with bars, cafés, restaurants, meals, discos, souvenir stores and all sorts of business.
Other beaches worth visiting are "Playa Manzanillo" separated from "Puerto Angelito" by a cliff, with calm blue colored waters ideal for snorkel; "Playa Carrizalillo", a white sanded beach with turquoise water and a stream, coral reefs and fishes; and "Playa Bacocho", with hotels and beach clubs.
Downtown of Puerto Escondido offers supermarkets, hotels, banks and the big Market "Benito Juárez" worth visiting.
